If it's time for a kitchen rethink, then it's also time for a new approach! 'Restore not replace' is the message of the moment. It's the environmentally friendly way and friendlier on your pocket too. If the kitchen units are still sound and the table and chairs in good condition, now is not the time to throw them out. A simple coat of International specialist paint can give years of new life to old items.
With International paint's new colour palette, there is no restriction on where to get your inspiration from. The colours for this Chic Floral Kitchen were taken from the lovely illustrations in The Flower Fairy books. Freshest greens, creams, pinks and mochas set the tone and International paint delivered on furniture, floor, kitchen units and tiles. The most magical transformation was the elegant silvery chrome finish on the old fridge & radiator. They shimmered with reflected light and gave a bright new look that mirrored the other colours in the scheme.
The look we wanted was fresh and modern, but with a floral, country theme. Our town house was transformed from the floorboards up, using International specialist paints to bring together a disparate selection of bits and bobs from pine to melamine, wood, plastic and metal. As this look is for living with not selling on, we took care with the preparation and priming to get a lasting effect that will be hardwearing as well as looking luxurious.
Getting the bones of the room right is half the battle and dusty, dingy dark floorboards are the place to start. We repainted the floor with Quick Drying Floor Paint in new Calico. It's subtler than white and gives a warmer finish too.
Kitchen units need a tough paint that is easy to wipe clean. We used One Coat Furniture & Cupboard paint in Lovely Olive on the doors and drawers of our units. We then used the same paint in Warm Mink on all the side panels and shelves. The final look was calm and charming. A simple swap from the old metal door handles to new wooden knobs painted the same colour way finished the look off perfectly.
We found a fabulous American style fridge that was still in good working order. It was a bit tatty though. After a thorough clean inside and out, we used Wipe On Multi Surface Primer. Using an old dust sheet to protect all nearby surfaces, we sprayed the fridge with Chrome Appliance Aerosol. It gives a lovely silver coloured chrome finish that gave this large fridge an elegant reflective look. This paint can be used on most appliances from fridges to washing machines, as it is specially formulated to work on plasticated surfaces.
Because of the way they warm up and cool down, radiators are not an easy surface for paint to cope with. However, Chrome Aerosol is designed to flex as the metal moves, so it won't crack or flake as the radiator heats and cools.
