New arrivals and nursery delights

With a baby on the way there's more than enough to spend your money on, without having to splash out on Nursery decorations. Luckily, it doesn't have to break the budget to fit out baby's room with lots of entertaining ideas and simple storage solutions!

Just a few tins of specialist paint can transform tatty old furniture, frame up some fabulous pictures and create a classic look for the cheapest of purchases. So, brush up your baby's room without breaking the bank with help from International paint.

To transform this room, we took a useful but ugly old bedside cabinet and brushed it up with Furniture & Cupboard paint to lighten the look. We put illustrations from a tatty children's nursery rhyme book into picture frames which we painted to match. Finally we revitalised a plain lamp and lampshade to create the perfect co-ordinated nursery scheme.

The best value storage solutions tend to be made out of low cost materials such as pine or plywood. These are practical products but aren't always decorative. To transform boring day-glow pine, simply turn to Furniture & Cupboard paint, which contains an ultra tough surface protector for an extra durable and easy clean finish. For plain plywood try using MDF Primer. It stops paint being absorbed into the porous surface, making it easier to apply and go further.

A really useful piece of furniture that's been scratched or damaged can be given a new lease of life with IFurniture & Cupboard Paint. Here, we sanded down the damaged surfaces, then cleaned them thoroughly to remove every bit of dust and dirt. We then applied specialist International paint which has been designed to adhere easily to this type of surface.

To breathe new life into old rooms, always take a little time to prepare properly. A baby's room, for instance, will often be warmer than the rest of the house, with fewer drafts. As a result, condensation can be a problem. Anti-Condensation paint inhibits the conditions that cause condensation to develop. For old damp patches which have been fixed, you can also stop the damp mark from affecting the new top coat or wallpaper with International Anti-Damp Paint.

Creating a cosy room that will see baby all the way through to toddling just takes a little time and some creative ideas. As with all things, the personal touch makes all the difference. Making baby's bedroom as snugly and welcoming as possible need not be difficult, or expensive. To ensure all your efforts are well spent and you create a look that will last, always make sure the paint you use is specially designed for the surface you're painting. It will take less time to do, be more effective in the process and last much longer.
